Driveway gates operate under different practical and structural demands from garden gates, and these demands shape the design considerably. A driveway gate typically spans a far wider opening, must support its own structural weight across that span without sagging over time, frequently needs to accommodate vehicle access and the associated hardware — hinges and latches engineered for genuine load-bearing duty rather than purely decorative purpose — and often carries a security function that a garden gate generally does not need to fulfil to the same degree.

For substantial period properties — larger Victorian and Edwardian villas, country houses, and rural properties with significant driveways — gates of this scale also carry real architectural weight in their own right. A grand house approached via a generic, undersized, or stylistically mismatched driveway gate undersells the property considerably before a visitor even reaches the front door. Conversely, a well-proportioned, correctly detailed driveway gate sets genuine expectation and contributes meaningfully to a property's overall presence.

The structural engineering required for a wide driveway gate spanning several metres differs substantially from a narrow garden gate, and this is an area where inadequate construction becomes apparent relatively quickly — gates built without sufficient diagonal bracing or adequate joint strength begin to sag and rack out of square within a few years of installation, a problem that becomes progressively worse and increasingly difficult to correct once it begins.
