Stained Glass Windows: Beyond the Front Door
Stained and leaded glass in period properties was never confined to the front door alone. Hallway sidelights, staircase windows, landing windows, and bathroom windows frequently carried decorative glass too — sometimes matching the front door's design as part of a coordinated scheme, and sometimes carrying entirely separate patterns suited to their specific location and function within the house.
Bathroom and other privacy-sensitive windows present a particular design opportunity that stained and leaded glass answers especially well: achieving genuine privacy without resorting to the frosted or obscured glass that strips a window of all character. A well-designed leaded panel using textured or coloured glass can obscure the view through effectively while remaining visually rich rather than simply opaque — solving a practical privacy requirement through genuine craft rather than a purely functional compromise.
Staircase and landing windows often presented Victorian and Edwardian builders with an opportunity for more ambitious decorative schemes than the front door alone allowed, given their typically larger glazed area and the fact that they were viewed primarily from within the house rather than needing to perform from the street. Surviving examples frequently show more elaborate figurative or pictorial designs than front door panels of the same property and period — landscape scenes, heraldic motifs, or more complex floral compositions that a smaller door panel could not accommodate.
Each of these window locations carries different practical considerations alongside the design itself. A bathroom window needs to balance privacy and light transmission in a way a hallway sidelight does not. A staircase window, often positioned at an unusual height or angle relative to ground level, needs a design that reads correctly from the specific viewing angles people will actually experience as they move through the stairwell, which is a meaningfully different design problem from a door panel viewed straight-on at eye level.
