Why Hinged Steel Doors Work in Almost Every Interior
Of the three MetaliX door systems — hinged, sliding, and bifold — the hinged system is the most widely applicable and the most commonly specified for residential projects across Nottingham, Birmingham, Derby, Leicester, and the wider Midlands. It requires no ceiling track, no floor guide rail, and no structural preparation beyond the opening itself. System 01 — SH-CL / SH-BC
Single Hinged Steel Doors
The single hinged steel door is the foundation of the MetaliX range and the natural starting point for most residential projects across Nottingham, Derby, Birmingham, and the wider Midlands. It fits any standard internal opening from 600mm wide and operates exactly as a conventional door — no track, no guide, no structural modification. The difference is entirely in the material and the visual effect: a black steel frame with clear glass, dividing a hallway from a kitchen or a living room from a dining space while keeping the light moving through both.
Two handle configurations are available. The SH-CL uses a classic lever handle — the TUPAI 2275 Q press handle from Portugal, available with magnetic latch or latch bolt lock, in AGB Italy finishes (Black, White, Chrome, or Satin). The SH-BC uses a custom-made steel handle in a bolder, more industrial aesthetic that suits spaces where the handle itself is intended to be part of the design statement. Both configurations use welded steel hinges and are available with optional soft-close mechanism.
A note on soft-close: the knee-joint office closer is the standard soft-close option. Screw-on hinges with integrated soft-close are also available but are only produced in silver finish — they cannot be painted. If a fully black finish throughout is essential to your project, specify the knee-joint closer rather than the screw-on hinge soft-close option, and discuss this with us at consultation.

System 02 — DH-CL / DH-BC
Double Hinged Steel Doors
Where a single door would feel undersized relative to the opening — or where the visual impact of a full pair of steel and glass panels is what the space calls for — double hinged doors are the answer. Both leaves swing outward from a central meeting point, creating a wide, dramatic passageway without requiring any ceiling track or floor guide rail. When one leaf needs to stay fixed for everyday use, one side can be fitted with a flush strike plate, allowing only the active leaf to open while the passive leaf remains fixed.
Double hinged configurations span openings from 600mm to 2400mm wide, making them suitable for anything from a generous standard doorway to a wide structural opening between a kitchen and dining room. As with single hinged systems, two handle options are available: DH-CL with the TUPAI 2275 Q classic lever, and DH-BC with a custom steel handle. Double swing doors with a ball latch allow both leaves to be opened simultaneously — if one leaf has a flush strike plate, that leaf must be opened first before the second leaf will open.

System 03 — SP / DP
Pivot Steel Doors
Pivot doors are the most architecturally ambitious configuration in the MetaliX hinged range and are increasingly specified for large open-plan interiors in Birmingham, Nottingham, and Solihull new-build and renovation projects. Where a conventional door is hung on hinges along one vertical edge, a pivot door rotates on a floor-mounted hydraulic pivot hinge — the JNF IN.05.204 system from Portugal — positioned 80mm in from the door's edge. This offset pivot creates a distinctive opening motion and allows the door to swing to a full 180 degrees, or to be held open at exactly 90 degrees using the built-in hold-open function.
The practical implications of pivot geometry are important to understand before specifying. The 80mm pivot axis offset means that for an 800mm door width, the usable passage width is only 700mm — fixed and non-adjustable. For a 1600mm double pivot, usable passage width is 1400mm. This is not a disadvantage; it is simply the engineering reality of pivot door geometry, and it should be accounted for at the planning stage. We discuss this at every site visit where a pivot is being considered.
Soft-close is built into the JNF pivot mechanism itself — it is not an add-on. Two closing speeds with adjustment are available. The door does not require any lock by default; handles can be custom steel or specified without handles entirely for a completely minimal aesthetic. Note that the hardware is not designed for water exposure — pivot doors are not suitable for shower cabins or wet room applications.

System 04 — DHA-CL
Double Action Steel Doors
The double action configuration allows the door to swing in both directions — open inward and outward from the same frame. This is a less common requirement in residential settings but is specified in applications where two-directional traffic needs to flow through a single opening without the door needing to be held open: between a kitchen and a dining room in a catering or hospitality context, between a utility space and a living area in a busy family home, or wherever the direction of approach is not predictable.
The DHA-CL uses welded steel hinges and the classic TUPAI 2275 Q handle, available with magnetic lock or latch bolt. It spans openings from 900mm to 1800mm wide. Soft-close is available as an optional addition. As with all MetaliX hinged systems, it is not suitable for shower cabins or wet room applications, and the hardware is not designed for water exposure.
Installation — Technical Notes
What to Know Before Your Site Visit
These are the installation considerations we discuss at every site visit. Raising them early — before the door is ordered — avoids any surprises during installation.
Baseboard & Moulding Trimming
Existing skirting boards and mouldings at the door opening will typically need to be trimmed or removed to allow flush installation within or against the wall reveal. This can be kept or trimmed based on your preference — discuss at site visit.
Install Baseboards After the Door
If new skirting boards or mouldings are being fitted as part of a wider renovation, always install them after the door structure is mounted — not before. The door frame needs to go in first, and skirting is fitted around it.
Soft-Close Finish Note
The knee-joint office closer (soft-close type 1) is available in any finish. Screw-on hinges with soft-close (type 2) are only produced in silver and cannot be painted. If a fully black finish is essential, specify the knee-joint closer.
Pivot — 80mm Axis Offset
Pivot doors have an 80mm offset from the door edge to the pivot axis. For an 800mm door, usable passage width is 700mm. For a 1600mm double pivot, usable passage is 1400mm. This is fixed and cannot be adjusted — confirm measurements at site visit.
Max Frame Size — Paint Furnace
Maximum single frame size is 3000mm x 1800mm, determined by the paint furnace capacity. Frames larger than this cannot be painted as a single unit. Very large openings can be accommodated with a split frame configuration — discuss at consultation.
Not Suitable for Wet Areas
MetaliX steel door hardware is not designed for water exposure. These doors are not suitable for shower cabins, wet rooms, or any application where the hardware will have direct or regular contact with moisture or steam.

Choosing Between Single, Double, and Pivot
Choose Single Hinged if...
Your opening is a standard internal doorway between 600mm and 1200mm wide. You want the simplest installation with no structural preparation. The door will have predictable traffic from one direction. This is the most common configuration for residential use — hallway to kitchen, sitting room to dining room.
Choose Double Hinged if...
Your opening is wider than 1200mm, or you want a pair of doors that open as a set for occasional full-width clearance. You want visual symmetry — two equal glass and steel panels meeting at a central point. One leaf can be fixed for everyday use. No track or ceiling modification required.
Choose Pivot if...
You want a visual statement as much as a functional door. The opening is in a large, open-plan space where the pivot's distinctive swing motion will read as an architectural feature rather than just a door. You are comfortable with the 80mm usable passage reduction and the floor-mounted hinge requirement.
Choose Double Action if...
Traffic needs to flow through the opening in both directions without the door needing to be held open or propped. More common in catering, hospitality, or high-traffic domestic applications than standard residential rooms. Specify DHA-CL and discuss exact width requirements at site visit.

Yes. 6mm clear tempered glass is the standard specification, but optional glass types include fluted (vertical reeded texture), krizet (fine patterned), satin (matte frosted, high privacy), bronze (warm tint), graphite (dark smoke tint), and laminated combinations. Textured glass types should not be combined with each other — pair one textured type with clear or smooth glass for the best result.
