Preserve the Integrity of Your Home's Entrance

Modern replacement doors often prioritise convenience over craftsmanship, overlooking the balanced proportions and honest detailing that define Arts and Crafts design. Generic finishes and ill-considered panels can disrupt your home’s architectural harmony. At Old English Doors, we create bespoke Arts and Crafts front doors that respect the movement’s principles while delivering modern strength and performance.

Arts and Crafts Doors: Honest Construction as a Design Principle

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late nineteenth century as a deliberate reaction against the mass-produced, machine-made ornamentation that had come to dominate Victorian decoration. Its founding principle was simple but had far-reaching design consequences: construction should be honest and visible rather than disguised, materials should be used in ways that respected their natural character, and decoration should arise from genuine craftsmanship rather than applied surface pattern.

Applied to a front door, these principles produce something distinctly different from either Victorian or Georgian work. An Arts and Crafts door typically shows its joinery as a deliberate feature rather than hiding it — exposed pegged tenons, visible timber grain left unpainted or lightly stained rather than concealed under paint, and ironmongery that is substantial, hand-forged in character, and treated as genuine decoration in its own right rather than purely functional hardware. Glazing, where present, often uses simple leaded patterns in clear or lightly tinted glass, sometimes incorporating small areas of colour, but generally avoiding the dense decorative leadwork of high Victorian design in favour of something more restrained and structurally honest.

Panel arrangements in genuine Arts and Crafts doors tend toward simplicity — fewer, larger panels rather than the multiple smaller panels of Victorian work — with moulding, where it exists at all, kept shallow and unfussy. The overall visual effect is one of evident solidity and craftsmanship rather than applied ornament: a door that looks handmade because it genuinely is, with construction quality doing the work that decoration did in earlier periods.

This is precisely the design tradition that is hardest to reproduce convincingly using modern manufacturing methods. A composite door cannot show genuine exposed joinery because it has none to show — its construction is concealed by design. Reproducing Arts and Crafts character requires the actual traditional joinery the movement championed, not a surface-level visual reference to it.

At Old English Doors, our Arts and Crafts work uses precisely the construction methods the movement itself valued — genuine mortice and tenon joinery, often left partially visible by design, solid timber selected for grain character rather than uniformity, and hand-forged or substantial period-appropriate ironmongery. This is bespoke work in the fullest sense: each door reflects genuine handcraft because that is the only way to authentically produce it.

Arts and Crafts influence appears extensively in Edwardian and early twentieth-century housing across the regions we serve, and we design and install bespoke Arts and Crafts doors for homeowners across Nottingham, Leicester, Derby, Sutton Coldfield, Manchester, St Albans, Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Northampton, Warwick, Solihull, and Worcester, whose properties carry this distinctive architectural heritage.
