Why Steel and Glass

The Crittall Look — Without the Crittall Price

Steel and glass internal doors have become one of the most sought-after interior choices in the UK. Their slender black frames and clear glass panels divide a space without closing it off, drawing light through an entire floor plan while adding an architectural edge that reads as both contemporary and timeless.

The problem, until now, has been price. Through our partnership with MetaliX — a precision European manufacturer — we offer a genuinely comparable product at a more accessible price point. The hardware is European throughout: HAFELE sliding systems from Germany, JNF pivot hinges from Portugal, TUPAI handles from Portugal, and AGB locks from Italy. The quality is not compromised to meet the price. The manufacturing is simply done more efficiently.

Old English Doors supplies and installs the full MetaliX range across Nottingham, Birmingham, Derby, Leicester, Coventry, Wolverhampton, and the wider Midlands — alongside our established bespoke timber door and wooden window service. Every project starts with a free site visit and no-obligation quote.

The Full Range

Three Door Systems. Every Configuration.

Every opening is different and the right door system depends on the space it serves. We offer three core MetaliX systems — hinged, sliding, and bifold — each in single and double configurations, with pivot options for statement openings. Not sure which suits your project? We discuss it at the site visit before anything is specified.

Steel and glass hinged internal door — double hinged configuration

System 01

Hinged & Pivot Steel Doors

The most versatile system in the range. Single hinged doors suit standard internal openings from 600mm wide. Double hinged doors open a space dramatically without requiring any ceiling track. Pivot doors — operated by hydraulic JNF floor-mounted hinges from Portugal — create wide, unobstructed passageways and hold open at 90 degrees.

System 02

Sliding Steel Doors

Where floor space is limited or a swinging door would interrupt the flow of a room, sliding systems are the natural answer. MetaliX sliding doors run on HAFELE Germany ceiling-mounted or wall-mounted tracks. Single, double, and cascade three-door systems are all available, with optional soft-close mechanisms on closing and opening.

Steel and glass bifold internal door — HAFELE Fold 100 system

System 03

Bifold Steel Doors

For openings where you want the option to fully clear an entire wall between two spaces, bifold systems deliver what neither hinged nor sliding doors can — complete clearance. MetaliX bifold doors use the HAFELE Fold 100 system, available in single and double folding configurations spanning up to 6000mm. Panels stack neatly to one or both sides.

Why Choose Us

What Separates MetaliX Steel Doors from the Alternatives

European Manufacturing Precision

MetaliX doors are manufactured in a dedicated European facility using precision CNC-cut steel profiles. Every frame is painted in a purpose-built furnace accommodating frames up to 3000x1800mm — the maximum size that can be painted as a single unit and transported through standard UK stairwells. This is not a workaround. It is the correct engineering answer to a real logistical constraint.

Named European Hardware Throughout

Sliding systems use HAFELE Germany tracks — the same brand specified by architects across Europe. Pivot hinges use JNF hydraulic systems from Portugal with genuine soft-close built into the mechanism. Handles use TUPAI 2275 Q levers from Portugal. Locks use AGB magnetic and latch systems from Italy. Every component is specified, not improvised.

6mm Tempered Safety Glass as Standard

All MetaliX doors ship with 6mm tempered safety glass as standard. Tempered glass is four to five times stronger than standard float glass and when it breaks, it fractures into small rounded fragments — a statutory requirement for glass in doors under UK building regulations. Optional glass types include fluted, krizet, satin, bronze, graphite, and laminated combinations.

Backed by Old English Doors

MetaliX steel doors are supplied and installed by Old English Doors — a Nottingham-based joinery workshop with an established track record in bespoke timber doors, windows, and period joinery across the Midlands. You are not buying from an online retailer and arranging your own installation. We visit the site, measure, advise, order, and install. One team throughout.

Competitively Priced Against the UK Market

The most comparable UK-manufactured steel door systems start at £2,499 and upward for a single door. MetaliX products, manufactured to comparable or superior hardware specifications in Europe, are supplied and installed at a meaningfully lower price point — without compromising on component quality. Contact us for a specific quote; pricing is transparent and based on your exact opening.

Full Range in One Place

Most UK steel door suppliers concentrate on one or two system types. We supply the full MetaliX range: hinged, double-action, pivot, single sliding, double sliding, cascade sliding, single bifold, and double bifold — plus fixed panels and interior window components for projects where a door needs to be part of a wider glazed partition scheme.

Specified Hardware

Every Component from Named European Suppliers

This is not a detail most door suppliers talk about, because most cannot say it. MetaliX specifies hardware by manufacturer and country of origin — not by generic description.

Germany
HAFELE

Sliding and folding hardware systems. Used on all sliding door tracks and bifold folding mechanisms. One of the most widely specified hardware brands in European interior design.

Portugal
JNF

Hydraulic pivot hinges for SP and DP pivot door systems. Built-in soft-close mechanism. Rotation up to 180°. Hold-open function at 90°. Floor-mounted with ±3mm adjustment tolerance.

Portugal
TUPAI

2275 Q lever handles. Classic press handle design. Available with magnetic latch or latch bolt locks. Full-height lock reinforcement options available.

Italy
AGB

Magnetic and latch lock systems. Available in Black, White, Chrome, and Satin finishes. Selection subject to availability and project requirements.

Glass Options

Standard and Optional Glass Specifications

All MetaliX doors ship with clean, clear 6mm tempered glass as standard. For projects requiring privacy, texture, or decorative character, the following options are available. Note: do not combine two textured glass types — pair textured with smooth glass for best results.

Clear / Clean

Standard. Maximum transparency. 6mm tempered.

Fluted

Vertical reeded texture. Partial obscurity. Warm, contemporary feel.

Krizet

Fine patterned texture. Modest obscurity. Industrial character.

Satin

Matte frosted. High privacy. Diffuses light evenly.

Bronze

Warm tinted glass. Reduces light transmission. Strong visual character.

Graphite

Dark smoke tint. Bold, contemporary. High-contrast against black frames.

Laminated

Two layers bonded. Options: bronze+graphite, satin+bronze, graphite+ultra-clear.

Custom

Bespoke combinations available. Discuss at consultation.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do steel and glass internal doors last?

Steel door frames, when properly finished and maintained, are effectively indefinite in their structural lifespan. Unlike timber, steel does not warp, swell, or rot. The paint finish will need attention over time — much like any painted surface — but the underlying structure does not degrade. The 6mm tempered safety glass carries no inherent lifespan limitation under normal indoor conditions. Hardware from HAFELE, JNF, and TUPAI is rated for high cycle counts well beyond typical domestic use.

Are MetaliX steel doors a Crittall alternative?

Yes — in the sense that they serve the same design and functional purpose at a more accessible price point. Crittall is the original UK steel window and door manufacturer commanding a premium that reflects their heritage. MetaliX doors achieve the same slender black frame and clear glass aesthetic using precision European manufacturing and named European hardware, at a price that makes this style of door genuinely accessible rather than a luxury reserved for high-specification renovation budgets.

What are the downsides of steel internal doors?

It is worth being direct about this. Steel doors are heavier than timber doors of the same size, which affects installation requirements. They are not suitable for wet environments — the hardware is not water-resistant, so shower rooms and areas with direct water exposure are not appropriate applications. The frame finish can scratch, which is repairable with the correct paint but requires attention when it occurs. Soft-close mechanisms in silver screw-on hinge configurations cannot be painted, limiting finish options in some configurations. None of these are reasons not to choose a steel door — they are reasons to discuss your specific application at consultation so the correct system is specified from the start.

Are steel doors cheaper than aluminium alternatives?

Genuine steel and quality aluminium steel-look systems sit in a similar price bracket at the higher end of the internal door market. The key visual difference is sightline thickness — genuine steel frames are typically slimmer, which is the defining visual characteristic. At the lower end, aluminium "Crittall-style" systems are available more cheaply but with corresponding reductions in frame quality and hardware specification. MetaliX sits in the genuine steel category at a competitive price point.

How do I maintain a steel and glass internal door?

Internal steel doors require minimal maintenance. The glass can be cleaned with any standard glass cleaner. The steel frame should be wiped with a damp cloth — avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the paint. If scratches occur, touch up with the correct RAL colour paint. Hardware components should be checked annually for smooth operation and lubricated if required. Soft-close mechanisms may need minor adjustment over time as they settle — this is a simple adjustment, not a replacement.

Can the guide rail be installed into a concrete ceiling?

No — this is an important installation point to raise early. Sliding and bifold guide rails cannot be installed directly into concrete due to reinforcement bars. Where a concrete ceiling exists, a custom support beam must be installed at the mounting location first. If a client is lowering a ceiling in the same room, a reinforcement plate must be built into the ceiling structure at the door mounting point before the ceiling is finished. We discuss all of this at the site visit and advise on the correct structural preparation before anything is ordered.

Do you supply and install, or supply only?

We supply and install. Old English Doors handles the site visit, measurement, specification, order, and installation entirely in-house. We do not supply doors for self-installation or third-party fitting — installation quality directly affects how the door performs, and we are not willing to carry responsibility for a product we have not fitted ourselves.
