The Edwardian Front Door: Lighter, Wider, More Glass
The Edwardian era — roughly 1901 to the outbreak of the First World War — produced a front door noticeably different in character from its Victorian predecessor, even though the two periods sit back to back. Where Victorian doors grew increasingly decorative and dense through the 1880s, Edwardian design pulled back toward simplicity and, crucially, toward light.
Edwardian front doors are typically wider and taller than Victorian doors of the same property type, reflecting the more generous hallways and room proportions that defined Edwardian house plans. The glazed area is significantly larger — it is common to see an Edwardian door with two-thirds or more of its upper section given over to glass, compared to the single small panel typical of an early Victorian door. This glazing is frequently arranged in a simpler grid pattern rather than dense Victorian leadwork, though decorative leaded panels with restrained geometric or stylised floral motifs remain common, particularly where Arts and Crafts influence was present.
Panel mouldings on Edwardian doors are shallower and cleaner than Victorian equivalents — the era's design language was moving toward the simplicity that would eventually flower into full Arts and Crafts and early Modernist work. Hardware followed the same trajectory: Edwardian door furniture tends toward cleaner lines and less ornamentation than the heavier Victorian ironmongery that preceded it.
Getting an Edwardian door right means resisting the temptation to default to "Victorian style with more glass." The proportions are genuinely different — wider stiles, a different panel-to-glazing ratio, and a generally more horizontal sense of composition reflecting the wider hallways Edwardian houses were built around. A door designed without this distinction looks like a Victorian door wearing a slightly different outfit, not an authentic Edwardian piece.
