The Architecture of a Georgian Front Door
Georgian architecture is built on a single governing idea: proportion. Every element of a Georgian facade — the spacing of windows, the height of the ground floor, the placement of the front door — follows a mathematical relationship designed to create visual calm and balance. The front door is not a decorative afterthought within this system. It is the anchor the entire composition is built around.
A genuine Georgian door is almost always panelled in a six-panel arrangement, sometimes eight, with the panels graduating in size as they rise — larger at the bottom, smaller toward the top, echoing the classical principle of visual weight resting at the base. The mouldings are restrained rather than ornate; Georgian design favoured understatement over decoration, trusting proportion alone to carry the visual interest. Above the door, a fanlight — semicircular, elliptical, or rectangular depending on the precise decade — admits light into the hallway while completing the door's classical framing.
Door cases were typically flanked by pilasters or simple architraves, sometimes supporting a small pediment, and ironmongery was kept deliberately modest: a knocker, a letterplate, and door furniture in brass or iron that did not compete with the architecture surrounding it.
This is exactly where most modern replacement doors fail. A composite door marketed as "Georgian style" will often borrow the six-panel layout while getting the proportions wrong — panels too uniform in size, mouldings too deep or too shallow, a fanlight that is decorative rather than structurally part of the door case. The result looks like a costume rather than the genuine article.

We study the spacing and scale of the existing facade — the window proportions, the brick course heights, the existing door case if one survives — and build the panel arrangement, moulding depth, and fanlight design to sit correctly within that specific frame. The result is a door that reads as original to the building, because it has been designed using the same logic the original Georgian builders used.
We work in solid hardwood throughout, with traditional mortice and tenon joinery and ironmongery selected for genuine period accuracy rather than approximation. For listed Georgian townhouses and properties within conservation areas, this level of accuracy is frequently a statutory requirement rather than simply good practice — and it is where our heritage capability matters most.
